Pitt County Schools First Public School District in U.S. to Implement Sprint Empowered Education Desktop
Pitt County Schools in Greenville, N.C., today became the first public school district in the United States to implement the Sprint Empowered Education Desktop.
Charlotte, N.C.— October 22, 2003Sprint (NYSE: FON, PCS) is providing two schools in the Pitt County district - Eastern Elementary and Belvoir Elementary - with its innovative Empowered Education Desktop and newly developed Elementary Curriculum Pack. The Empowered Education Desktop, powered by LearningStation, combines Sprint’s world-class communications network with the delivery of a comprehensive listing of high-quality educational curriculum and learning tools from a wide range of leading K-12 content providers. By providing online access to a variety of curricula through software applications, teachers can extend the learning experience beyond the classroom to help improve student achievement.
“By combining its networking services with leading education content providers, Sprint has created a powerful new learning tool in the Empowered Education Desktop,” said Rejeanor Scott, Pitt County Schools’ director of media and technology. “We have worked extensively with Sprint over the years to service a variety of our technology needs, and are excited to expand our relationship.”
Eastern Elementary and Belvoir Elementary will receive a variety of instructional curriculum resources, productivity tools and collaboration utilities through the Elementary Curriculum Pack from leading developers like LearningStation, Inspiration Software, Riverdeep, netTrekker, Softease and ePALs.
“The benefit of the Empowered Education Desktop is that schools no longer have to maintain software content on the desktop computer in the classroom or on servers at the school, deferring significant hardware, operating software, distribution, support and maintenance costs,” said Lisa Flanagan, Sprint education account executive. “This virtual’ environment provided by Sprint makes classroom and learning software available to students and teachers on any computer that has Internet access.”
