P.E.T. Special Education Program

P.E.T. equips educators with tools required to meet the needs of students who are on an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). P.E.T. is especially helpful in providing information about a student’s learning style for the Present Level of Educational Performance (PLEP) within an IEP. This includes a description of the techniques and/or materials that have proven particularly to be effective or ineffective when working with the student.

The P.E.T. for Special Education package is available at the school or district level. Contact us to customize a P.E.T. package to meet the needs of your special education program.

Program plan

  • All students with an IEP complete the P.E.T. learning style profile
  • Each teacher completes the P.E.T. teaching and learning profile
  • The special education teacher includes the resulting narrative from the Student P.E.T. profile within the IEP Present Level of Educational Performance
  • The special education teacher reviews the students learning style with the IEP team
  • Each individual teacher utilizes P.E.T. in order to develop teaching strategies that meet the student’s unique learning needs
  • The special education teacher provides parents with the P.E.T. parent report in order to provide the most supportive home learning environment

Metrics

  • Completion of teacher profiles
  • Completion of student profiles
  • Observable integration of P.E.T. data into the IEP
  • Teacher utilization of the P.E.T. system

Expected outcomes

  • Increased awareness and consideration among faculty of special education student learning styles and preferences, providing the foundation for respect-based relationships and enhanced communication between teachers and students
  • Students are assisted in becoming self-directed learners by helping them understand their own learning style and encouraging them to leverage this knowledge for greater learning success
  • Increased effort by general curriculum teachers to modify instruction and assignments to support the needs of special education students
  • Increased family awareness of student learning style, enabling parents to adapt the home learning environment to most closely align with student needs
